If you travel just to end up around other Americans, speaking English, sightseeing, drinking, clubbing then no, it's not likely to be some grand revelation. But it will be fun and you'll have good stories to share.
If you challenge yourself a little, then yeah. I found it worthwhile. Whether it's working/studying abroad, going on a road trip, escaping to the woods Thoreau-style, you always bring yourself with you. You realize your own strengths and flaws when everything around your life has changed, except you. You may travel expecting to become a new person or make a mental breakthrough, but instead you are forced to confront who you are. This video really sums it up: The Answer is Not a Hut in the Woods.
