What’s something that’s popular to hate that you actually enjoy?

I lived in Spain and got shit on from time to time by anyone. My friend was in an MBA program and his classmates loved to make fun of America and Americans. Some didn’t seem malicious, but others actually seemed to have honest hate. Two Germans I met were the most outright excited at the fall of America from being a superpower.

There was also a lot of racism towards my Central/South American friends. But it was racism where they didn’t think they were saying racist things. “Lazy” “poor” “low-class” “3rd-world” and some others.

Also, almost got beat up by a South African dude. And a group of Aussies just kept calling me a “septo”. These were all interactions before I even held a conversation with them. They just found out I was an American.

My goal was to show them that Americans aren’t all what they think and everyone even the guys that immediately wanted to fight me became friendly after we talked. But then they’d just say “You’re not a typical American. “

This being said I loved Europe and I love most everyone I met from all over the world. I just wish people wouldn’t judge you on where you’re from, but for who you are.
