Sonic Mania - just straight up don’t like the gameplay. It’s too annoying when I’m running fast and then hit an obstacle; feels like I’m being punished for playing rushing around (which is how I thought Sonic was supposed to be played).

You're thinking of the 3D games. The 2D games are a bit different (and better imo). You're not supposed to be runninh fast if you don't know how to play, the fun is being rewarded with being able to zip through the level once you're skilled enough.

I haven't encountered much of this tbh. Unlike ither Sonic games you can see much farther ahead (and therefor have much more time to react) and there aren't any obstacles that seem unfair.
