What's a lie you told that went WAY too far?

After living in the same city for over a decade, I had this urge to go travel and see more of the country. So I went to a smaller, more remote city that was about 3 hours away by plane and spent most of a week checking it out. It was alright. I lived in a dinky hotel, traveled around the city a bit, went to the few places locally that passed for tourist destinations and saw some interesting things, tried out some local restaurants, and came home. Besides acting on the urge to travel, I didn't do anything remotely outlandish on the trip itself.

Except... for some reason I couldn't bear to tell anyone I knew that I just wanted to take some time off to travel and see the countryside. So as far as anyone from work knows, I had to go for a family thing, and as far as friends and family knows, I had to go for something work related. I built two separate scenarios on what was going on "up there" that just got more and more elaborate over time. To coworkers I had a non existent sick aunt living on her own whose live in caregiver left on short notice, and to friends and family the company I worked for had a non existent regional branch that needed to get their people up to speed on equally non existent new company software. I even started weaving local events, past histories of people I knew, and online research into fleshing out both scenarios and making what I was supposedly doing on my trip sound more believable.

I have no overlap between the people I work with, and friends and family, but to this day I dread the prospect of the two ever mixing at some social event with me there, thinking everything's probably going to turn out fine, only to hear someone ask offhandedly "oh how's your aunt in that city doing?" or "how'd that software upgrade in that city turn out?" with someone from the other side in earshot.

The whole thing's fucking retarded. Doubly so because thinking back I'm almost positive nobody would have given a shit if I'd just said from the start "oh by the way I'm feeling burnt out and want to take some time off to go travel for a bit. See you in a week."
