When people say Xbox is "Just Halo, Gears Forza" it's unfortunate that it's said as if those aren't good franchises

Could you define this for me? It appears that you mean 'not playable anywhere else' but then you say that playing on PC is a nice bonus. I need to know what you actually mean if you're going to keep saying I am misrepresenting your argument.

I explained it in my first paragraph. A full exclusive is one where it's only on xbox. I would also include exclusives where you need an xbox one to play. So, for example, if you buy an xbox one game, you can play it on a computer that has an active Gold sub and home console tied to it. That way xbox gamers could play their games on PC, but you'd still need an xbox to play them.

Ok. Not sure how this is relevant today or to the discussion we are having.

Because it still holds true today. You take away a console's exclusives, and everyone moves to the console with exclusives.

Consoles used to be unique machines each with their own quirks but that is over now, consoles are PCs and use PC architecture.

They still are, and they were always computers.

This is true but quickly becoming outdated as gaming is becoming a service.

No it's not. There's a reason why PS4 sold more, why xbox gamers are complaining about lack of exclusives, and why Phil Spencer addressed the issue numerous times.

Personally I chose Xbox because I prefer the controller and the UI and the online experience.

You can use the controller on PC. I like the UI, but not enough to justify spending $300+ on a console and $80 CAD a year. What online experience are you talking about? Every platform has online.

I think MS has realized that it's true product is Xbox Live, not the xbox console.

If that were true they wouldn't have released 3 different consoles this generation, nor would they move their games to PC where there is no Live or fee for playing online.

Sony hasn't made that decision yet (and why would they, they are selling well under the old console paradigm), but that paradigm is going to die as surely as Blockbuster Video died.

How? How would having exclusives make their console die, but MS having no exclusives keep their console alive?

So you define getting your money's worth as what games you can only play on their console?

Of course. How would spending money on an xbox for gaming be justified when you can't play any PS4 games, but PS4 can play all xbox games? That's not the way it is now, but it's the way you're okay with.

I think the value proposition is more complicated than that and includes other things, like media capabilities, controller, PC integration, backwards compatibility, having a moderated online experience

All those things should be nice features, not your sole reason for owning a console, since all of those can be achieved elsewhere.

Not at all. Consoles are way more than just their libraries.

I never said consoles are just their libraries.

If the only thing that sets your console apart is that you have paid people to make exclusive games for it, well, that's shitty value for the customer as the exclusivity of a game is an artificial exclusivity.
