There are generally three reasons to do well in school, one good, one ok, and one bad, I have gone through times of all three.

The worst reason is because of self esteem. If you can do well in school it is a great way to get praise if you get off on that sort of thing. The problem is that it makes it that much harder when you screw up, makes you extremely competitive, and is ultimately a shitty path, I've been down it, don't do follow it.

The second route is what most people say, job, money, etc. I've never been worried specifically about making a living but the idea of renown and a good career can be very appealing. Ultimately though working like this will make you miserable in school and only show you how to do well in school, not succeed outside of it, better than the first option but not a great idea.

The best option is to learn because you want to. I know it sounds really cliché, but seriously it is the route to go down. This isn't to say learning will be fun, learning is never fun, it is challenging and the only thing that can keep you going is a desire to learn something, not enjoyment of learning itself. Here is my advice to you since you are in tenth grade and still have time. The next essay you have to write, do a really good job on it, I don't mean write something according to the format just write something that you are proud of, if you are already fucking up it wont matter if you get a bad a grade on that one thing right? So just write something that you think is really good and turn that in, then talk to teachers about it, good teachers want to help you, and if your teachers aren't good find a good teacher and spend time with them. Talking with teachers is by far in a way the best way to improve in school. If you have a good teacher, in time writing something that they will think is good becomes enough reward in and of itself, just to prove to yourself and them that you can do it.

My advice summed up is this. Write something that is actually good, then show it to a teacher and ask them to help you, if they are lazy give up on them and try to find a teacher who actually gives a shit, they will make you care.
