Who are some directors who suddenly started making great films following a mediocre/bad filmography?

Lucio Fulci directed 15 movies mediocre/bad studio movies until he did massacre time in 1966. But it took him 11 more years to hit his most known period and the best streak of films: zombi, contraband, city of the living dead, the black cat, the beyond, the house by the cemetery and New york ripper. Between massacre time and the streak of famous horror, eurocrime and giallo films, he directed some fun movies, but there were still some not so great in the mix like ’the demonic womanizer constante nicosia, or: Dracula in Brianza’ and the white fang films. While the change might not be so sudden, the difference in quality and cultural impact of his early works compared to his gold period is massive.
