Wildest career switches to UX?

Physical therapy aide > Fencing Coach > UX Designer (contract / startup) > UX Design intern (agency startup) > Product Manager (promotion from first startup) > UX Designer at fintech

I know I included other UX experiences, but I wanted to add those since it played a huge role in getting a full time offer that actually pays well. Those earlier experiences paid me crumbs in equity.

I was able to land my first UX job even though the pay was garbage at the startup because they wanted someone who really needed experience to take advantage of (I found this out from people I worked with right before I left and that’s how the founders determined who to pick from the list of candidates). This is how I unfortunately got my foot in the door initially, but I was able to turn it around and use this experience and my promotion to Product Manager within the startup to land my current full time offer.
