Why is the word "hell" in the Bible?

They are dead now. You think people are going to be resurrected to die again? Every person is going to be resurrected to be judged

So how can someone go to heaven or hell before Judgment Day? This has always bugged me. Same as saying Jesus went to "hell" in some translations of the Apostle's Creed -- I believe hades or sheol is where Jesus went, and where the dead wait for judgment. Since the souls of the dead haven't been judged yet, it's neither heaven nor hell. Sheol is like God's waiting room for those yet to be judged.

Yet Jesus told one of the thieves He was crucified with that they would be in paradise together that day. The explanation I've heard is that (some?) righteous souls go directly to God's presence when they die, which is paradise, which is part of sheol/hades.

But then, I've also had some Christians tell me that the dead wait "sleeping" until resurrection. Also, some say that Jesus really went to hell when he was crucified -- it was part of His punishment for our sins. He also may or may not have been preaching to fallen angels there, not human souls, but that's just making things weird.

Anyway, see why I get confused?
