Is it worth becoming a teacher?

I enjoy the job even though I don't love working with kids more than anyone else, and I wouldn't call myself especially passionate about its impact either. I entered the job after a few years of feeling pretty terrible at work, and I like the supportive, communal atmosphere among staff that you get in (decent) schools. I didn't find that elsewhere in business. I also think it's an excellent job if you like academia more broadly; you'll have holidays to pursue your own interests and you can really see the impact of your learning on your own job/outcomes.

Don't get me wrong - I don't think you'd like it if you hate kids and want to ruin their life chances, but I also think it's important to know that not everyone is on a mission - that would have sounded quite intimidating to me.
