Your Own Personal Slaves by Daniel Garcia

That all depends on which alternatives you are willing to consider as "realistic." I don't claim to have all the answers but nobody can deny the often predatory and exploitative nature of global capitalism. Powerful interests work every day to suppress better alternatives for the workers in undeveloped countries and to keep from paying them a living wage. The capitalists tend to claim that this is just human nature so look the other way and don't worry about it, and for what its worth they may be mostly right; it's a cruel life and business is cruel. But if that's your stance then don't sugar-coat it.

Maybe these countries do benefit from being pulled into our orbit and propping up our economy from underneath like a pyramid scheme of living standards. Maybe our wealth will eventually trickle down, but if it does so it will be in the tiniest streams we can possibly manage to negotiate using our gigantic international leverage.

Or maybe if we stopped distorting global markets with subsidies and "aid" that might give these undeveloped economies a chance to compete on the global market and start building up production in their home countries. But we can't do that, because subsidies make sure things are cheap at home and "aid" is something that powerful American companies can get paid by the government to provide, and all we care about are Americans anyway, right? Better just look the other way.
