In 10 years hipsters will stop vaping and switch back to cigarettes because it's retro and ironic

That was never the meaning of the word.

To me it was. And as you can see from these comments, it was for a lot of other people too.

The first "hipsters" were white people who went to jazz clubs.

That's interesting. Thank you.

They did not "interpret the future" to figure out that eventually jazz would achieve more mainstream popularity, and decide to get there first.

How would you know? Well, it doesn't matter. I wasn't trying to say that hipsters were intentionally seeking out future trends in order to win some kind of competition. Personally, I think your average hipster is just sick of their options and wants to do something new and different.

They enjoyed the music, the atmosphere, and the taboo of breaking the norms of the time.

I think that's what most modern day hipsters do as well (actual hipsters, I mean). They're just trying to do something that feels better than what came before.

You can posit that anything will become a mainstream trend far enough in the future,

Yes, that's what I'm saying. I think it's pointless to argue over whether a hipster could dress like in a particular style, because it all depends on the context.

so I think suggesting that the ideas and motivations behind normcore will become mainstream is,

Normcore already is mainstream. It's what almost everyone already does, to one extent or another, and what they have been doing since the dawn of time. It only becomes a style for hipsters if they're in a culture that puts a lot of pressure on them to dress in a highly individualistic way.

is, frankly, sort of a silly way to defend the previous comment.

I don't see where you're coming from. I'm getting the impression that you think I'm making a much bigger claim than I really am.
