Advice for a sad boi

Taking an extra semester to graduate is a totally common thing, so don't beat yourself up over that. I know people who took 6 years to finish their BAs. That being said, your GPA is pretty rough and in the short term, it won't help you find internships between now and your graduation date.

But all is not fucked. There's a lot of ways you could salvage this situation.

  1. Get involved on campus and try to get a leadership position, it's easy and will help you develop resume-worthy management skills.

  2. Volunteer. If you've got nothing else on your resume, volunteering is the best way to fill the space. It shows that you have empathy, engage with a community, and generally give off the impression that you live a pretty busy life.

  3. Start a side project. UofT is dumping stupid amounts of money onto students who are ballsy enough to start their own ventures on campus. Watch a couple of episodes of Dragon's Den, and you'll know what to expect. If you know anything about markets and finance, you should be able to talk your way through a pitch no problem. Even if it's the biggest fail in the world, you still get to put 'Founder and CEO" on your resume, and you'll have taken 0 risks.

    1. Consider alternative career paths. Is a job in finance really what you want? What are some of your marketable interests? It's easier than ever to take a post-graduate 1 year certificate to become qualified for a job, supplemented by your degree.
