It totally depends on your friendship group and the tone that jokes usually take. Your friend also made an offensive joke which makes me think it’s a context in which people often say “inappropriate” things about sensitive subjects for a laugh. This is totally fine, as long as you’re all still respectful to one another at the end of the day.

I’d say you’re not an asshole for making the joke, but you may be an asshole depending on how you react if your friend tells you your feelings were hurt. I think as long as you respond with an open mind and a willingness to listen, the way you’d want someone to respond if you told them you were hurt by a joke they’d made, then you’re fine.
