Yeah, it might. Satire admittedly isn't always funny though. I really don't think non-southerners realize how self-deprecating southern humor is. We laugh at ourselves more than anything else.

Unnecessary pseudo-philosophical bs from yours truly: In my opinion, southerners are a paradox of humility and pride. We know better than to let ourselves get too big for our britches, but we're taught to extend a base level of respect and good behavior to everyone, which causes us to expect the same in return. When we see things that truly just disparage the south and only laugh at us, not with us, without even attempting to understand our culture, it makes us double down and turn inwards because it slaps our notion of deserved respect and honor right across the face (why southerners tend to be very defensive of the south and "yankees" are stereotyped as arrogant yet ignorant).

Since we double down rather than pitching a fit or trying to change how we're viewed, we've effectively reclaimed offensive stereotypes so that they're now just running jokes among us. We also tend to latch onto every unoffensive or comedic (read: laughing with us) portrayal of the south there is*, and we obviously *love southern comedians.

A really good current example of how much we like to laugh at ourselves is comedian Darren Knight's "Southern Momma" videos. Every single new gets shared like crazy on my facebook timeline, and they are damn accurate, might I add.

But anyway, TL;DR: I think southern humor tends to be so satirical and self-deprecating because we've been made fun of so much, but we ain't ones to moan and groan over something like that. Instead we just stubbornly kept to ourselves and our culture even more, so now the stereotypes are a running joke. But we do really appreciate unbiased or funny movies set in the south and southern entertainers**.

*And a bunch of cable networks almost figured that out, so now we have a bunch of shitty "reality" shows about a variety of good ol' down home regular cornbread and sweet tea southern folks that *totally represent who and how we actually are.
