Anthony Bourdain dead at 61, committed suicide

Because we don’t know the extent that his violent tendencies impacted his actions, it’s worth mentioning for context in my opinion.

I explicitly followed that up with

I didn’t know him personally, maybe it was both of those things (serious depression and/or running from responsibilities) together

If myself or you killed ourselves one day, despite never having serious skeletons in the closet, your family and everyone else will always wonder why. Why would an otherwise normal person do that? For people with violent skeletons in the closet, I think it’s fair to consider those might have had something to do with why he did what he did.

Perhaps not.

To say it’s a “horrific lack of empathy” to even mention them is a bit absurd, as bringing them up and how it might’ve impacted suicide is literally what empathy means.

Or can we accept that people can do horrible things and still be human beings whose suffering is bad and who deserve our sympathy?

Sure, but that’s an entirely different discussion. No one said or implied he didn’t deserve any sympathy.
