As I pointed out in my original comment and about four or five replies to other people who said the same thing-- yes, I agree that this not effective and I am not trying to justify it or condone it.
I am explaining why I think that other people do this, not arguing that it works or that it should be an accepted practice.
(And indeed specifically said that I did not do this or allow it to be done when I was in leadership, implying I don't think it necessary for good results.)
I am really not sure why everyone keeps replying to me and telling me it doesn't work or isn't good; yes, I agree, and I explicitly said that when I made the comment in the first place.
