Any law students here?

An 82 is a B or 3.0, but FSU Law doesn't officially use letter grades to calculate GPA. Official transcripts use the 100 scale because it shows more nuance in regards to class rank. For example, an 80 is a B, but an 85 is also a B. It's not really fair to say both are equal and award each person a 3.0 because the curve means we are directly competing with our classmates.

Someone who has an 85 average is ostensibly higher ranked than someone with an 80 average, even though both could technically be dubbed a 3.0 GPA. In other words, it allows potential employers to see who does better instead of just saying all B's are equal. In law school, higher rank translates to more/better job opportunities.

FWIW, that is at least how Dean Catalano, from the placement office, explained it to me. I'm also an incoming 1L.

Here's a link to College of Law handbook, the section regarding grading and the curve begins on page 33.
