Apple: stop routing idiots over a closed mountain pass

That was me a few years ago. I left Vail at about midnight and was headed back to Boulder. I was low on gas and figured I would stop at the gas station I had passed on my way there. It was next to the interstate, but unfortunately Siri routed me to a two-lane road through a mountain pass. Which I blindly followed. During a blizzard. I could barely see anything outside, let alone recognize where I was. 10+ miles and I realize something isn't right. I tried to turn around but then my car slid right off the road and got stuck in the snow. So there I was, in a blizzard in the middle of nowhere. Cold, dark and alone. My phone was nearly dead too, and I couldn't charge it anyways since I was completely out of gas now. I called 911, told them what happened and that I didn't know where I was. They were trying to locate me by triangulating the call, and that's when my phone died.

So I knew I was fucked. Put on my hazards and got back into my half-wet snowboarding jacket and snow pants and just waited. Hours go by, and then finally a car comes down the road and miraculously they see me and stop (my car was almost snowed over at this point). Two stoners that didn't know where they were either thanks to Siri. At least they had a Jeep. They kept driving until they got a signal on their phones and then helped me find a motel by calling every one in the next three towns to find a vacancy. Right next to the slopes in Colorado during ski season, yeah right. Eventually after stopping at four places I finally find one room available in a really dumpy motel. Those two stoners saved my ass by stopping and then finding me a place to stay, so of course I dropped them $40 (which I later realized was all the cash I had... yikes).

Morning comes and now I'm stranded three towns away from my car. I try to call a tow company but God dammit the phone in the room didn't work. I had to start walking until I found a pay phone, but I wasn't even sure if pay phones still existed. I walked all over town until I found one a couple miles away at a convenience store. Fate had it that I was carrying just enough change in my jacket pockets to make one call. I call the tow company that I had looked up in the phone book before I left the motel. No answer... Shit. I go inside and tell the clerk I tried to make a call but the phone didn't work. He comped me the change so I try to call the company again.

Good--they answered. All the trucks were out dealing with wrecks because of the storm, but they figured they could bump me up because pulling my car out would be relatively quick. They tell me I'm by a coffee shop and to just hang out there. After an hour or so a tow truck comes by and picks me up. He told me he was basically on his lunch, but he was going to help me out and only charge me for the gas to drive there (plus an extra few gallons in a gas container for my car when we get there) if I bought him a couple Red Bulls and hot dogs at the gas station. Obviously, I agreed (I still had my debit card). It took maybe 20-30 minutes to get back to my car. Now that it was day I could see how fucking terrifying this road was; I could have easily slid right off the mountain with my RWD car. Anyways, he pulls me out and I'm on my way. Although the 20-30 min drive to my car became 2+ hours on the interstate because of the traffic coming out of Vail on a Sunday afternoon. Whatever, at least it was done.

I realized this incident changed my general perspective on life in a couple ways. It reassured me that there are good people out there that will still go out of their way to help someone else. I also worry a lot less now. I know that literally everything can go wrong but I'll probably still come out of it okay. And this was all thanks to Siri's guidance.
