Are religion and science compatible? Why or why not?

Christianity and Judaism seem to be. Primarily because they evolved in a secular context where notions of separation from church and state exist. Even Christians who don't believe in evolution have managed to square such ideas with science. In Muslim countries they take religion too seriously and therefore even wealthy countries like Kuwait do terribly in mathematics and science. One of the few Muslim Nobel prize winners spoke about hoe hard it was to get scientific funding taken seriously in the gulf. He said they thought such science would be corrosive of religious belief. In my opinion they are right, scientific knowledge is corrosive of religious belief, and its a good thing too.
