Ask a Knitter - September 10, 2019

Hi all! I would love some advice on interpreting this knitting pattern. It's the nelson collar from wool and the gang.

The instructions say to:

1) Knit the first stitch, then work in half-twisted rib (following instructions for row 1) until you have just 1 stitch left, knit this stitch.

2) Knit the first stitch, then work in half-twisted rib (following instructions for row 2) until you have just 1 stitch left, knit this stitch.

The instructions for row 1 say to knit a stitch twisted and then purl the next stitch and repeat these two stitches until the end of the row.

The instructions for row 2 say to knit a stitch and then purl the next stitch twisted and repeat these two stitches until the end of the row.

Putting this all together, I have been doing the following:

-Right side: Knitting the first stitch, then alternating twisted knit and regular purl until the last stitch which I regular knit.

-Wrong side: Knitting the first stitch, then alternating regular knit and twisted purl until the last stitch which I regular knit.

The result looks great except for the edges, which look messy and ugly and not at all like the photos from the website. Does anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong? Am I misinterpreting the pattern?

Thanks so much in advance for any advice!
