Atlas of Prime Earth 3E

I've seen the single issues of it, not the full thing. As for if it's worth picking up it really depends on what you want out of it.

If you are looking for any level of depth, or interesting characters then probably no, if you are just looking for ideas then maybe, if you are looking to fill that gap in your collection of freedom city related products then yes.

In general this kind of book has two major schools of thought.

  1. Figure out what areas are important in your setting & develop them to the level necessary to be interesting.

  2. Split up the entire planet into sections & give every single area the same page count & try to come up with something mildly interesting for all of them.

Alas they chose the second direction, so that they could produce it within the framework of their monthly mini release time-table & to increase their income streams.

The end result is that no area is given enough space to really give any depth to the writing, most of it is pretty scattershot, to the point that many of the entries have to not only cover, but find an interesting point for many different countries in that area.

In some cases the content is just utterly lacking, for example, heroes are introduced to the reader in a single paragraph, an illustration & NO stats (or worse, being told that a build is just this or that archetype out of the book minus this or that).

For example we are introduced to the Champions of West Africa, each character is given a paragraph made up of two sentences & a group picture..... That was it for that teams members, no stats, no background, just two sentences & a group shot.

Many of the characters who do get stats are exactly the type of character you would get if I told you to create a PL 10 Batman NPC, set in Tasmania & you are only going to have two paragraphs to explain the entirety of the character, from their back ground, history, powers, driving influences, etc.

Likewise most of the artwork is rather generic, echoing the "not quite ready for prime time" nature of many of the characters.

Don't get me wrong there are bits & pieces that you can see would be interesting if they developed them further, there are even a few bits that are good to go right out of the book, but mostly it's just to thin on the ground.

So to reiterate I can't tell you if you should or should not pick up this book, nor do I intend to, it depends entirely on what you are looking to get out of it.

Whatever you eventually decide I hope this helps you make an informed choice as a consumer. :)
