Balancing alternate resting rules

  1. Over a long rest, a character regains either half of the hitpoints they currently have OR half their hitpoint maximum, whichever number is higher.
    Okay, first thing and already I'm seeing that you're having some trouble with the math. At what point would a character EVER benefit from recovering half of current instead of half of max? Every character will ALWAYS recover Half of Max HP, because if their current HP is more than half, they wont benefit from recovering their current amount.
  2. A long rest only restores half of each spell level's slots, rounded down (minimum of one slot regained)
  3. A long rest can only be taken in a safe and secure location, such as an inn or tavern or otherwise warm and secured area.
  4. A short rest takes 2 hours and can only be taken in a secured location, such as a barred up chamber or the same locations that a long rest would be taken in.
  5. Failed Death Saving Throws only reset after a long or short rest.
