A Beginners Guide to Drinking Alcohol.

Before I get into this guide, I would like to mention that I am not encouraging drinking, whether you are of age or not. All I am attempting to do is give some advice to those who are starting to drink alcohol at parties and don’t want to look like an idiot. So let’s get into it.

Firstly I would like to give some advice on softer alcohol:

  • Beer. This is a drink that most guys out there will be drinking due to social convention and I personally cannot stand. I would recommend drinking Beer at parties, because you won’t get intoxicated too soon, and if you don’t want to drink very much you can just sip at a single bottle for the night. My recommendations of beers to try would be:

Budweiser
Desperados Heineken Becks

  • Wine. This is a drink that most females will be drinking, and I two golden rules. Don’t buy too cheap, and don’t touch red. Wine has so many varieties, that it would be pointless for me to attempt to recommend brands, but as long as you’re not buying anything in a plastic bottle, or from the bargain bin, you cannot go too wrong. The idea price range is £5-£7. Red wine is also a no go, because if any is spilt it will stain instantly. Many times have I seen furniture and carpet ruined by a clumsy hand knocking a glass onto the floor. Also, your sick will be blood red if you throw up, which can be quite disconcerting.

  • Cider. This is a drink that I believe is not widely available in America, but is rather popular here in England. Imagine alcoholic apple juice if you have never tried it. It’s a similar alcohol level to Beer, being around 3-10%. Again, similar too beer, you won’t get too intoxicated too quickly which is why it’s great for pree drinking or simply enjoying. When it comes to buying, I would recommend cheaper brands, because they are much sweeter and taste better to a younger pallet. My recommendations would be:

Strongbow, Strongbow dark fruits, Kopparberg, Old Mount

I will now try to give a few tips on drinking Hard Liquor:   * Vodka. Probably the best liquor to drink because it is the most tasteless and is still very alcoholic. My golden rule is to never drink straight/neat. This is where the alcohol isn’t mixed with any other liquid, therefore your just drinking pure Vodka. You will get very drunk, very quickly and its won’t be pretty, trust me… I would recommend mixing the Vodka with:

Lemonade Coke Orange Juice

• Rum, Whiskey, Brandy etc. Just don’t.

A few tips on drinking respectfully:

• When it comes to not looking like a prat when you’re drinking, it’s very important to not drink too quickly. Start off slow. A few beers or a glass of wine to get you in the mood, but no more. There is nothing worse than someone turning up drunk because at that point you’re just a liability.   • Don’t make anyone drink when they don’t want too, and don’t let your self be peer pressured into drinking. It’s easier said than done, but it’s not worth the bollocking from your parents or the hang over.   • Just enjoy yourself and remember that you really don’t need to drink to have a laugh.   I hope that this helped a few people who are just starting to drink, just remember to have a laugh but don’t become a liability by being super drunk. Get tipsy by all means but don’t take it too far. Above all, have fun and stay safe.
