Bipolar disorder can be hard to tell from depression due to their similar symptoms, except for mania in bipolar. Researchers had 80% accuracy in distinguishing bipolar disorder from depression using special MRI scans based on how the amygdala reacted to different facial expressions in a new study.

The problem with bipolar disorder is that the manic side doesn’t have to be a regular occurrence. I’m diagnosed Bipolar 1 but have not had anything but depression for 8 years and I’m mostly unmedicated. I don’t know what her doctors are using to diagnose your wife but if there was even one true manic phase or rapid cycling, she will keep that diagnosis for life because she will always be capable of going back there again. That being said, don’t be afraid to request the medication that she wants. After many trial and errors, I know the combination of drugs that works for me so when I see a new doctor, I tell them up front that’s what I want. They are skeptical because they are not recommended for Bipolar disorder but I agree to be closely monitored on them and insist that it has worked for me in the past without incident.
