Card Talk #16 - A look at Random cards

Do you think it's unfair that a random spawn can win you or lose you a game, or do you believe it's part of the nature of card/board games?

I mean, as long as Keeper of the Vale is still in its current state, it'll be an aspect of Duelyst, that's for sure. I'm okay with losing to something random like Paddo where it's basically an all-in. If it works, damn, that was insane! If it doesn't, you spent 7 mana and probably aren't going to play any other significant cards this turn, so if you weren't already winning, that'll probably still be the case.

Cards like Obelysk can be manipulated if need be, but to be honest, if you placed it in a proper position, it'll probably do what you want it to do. Even when it spawns backwards, I can sometimes use that and move the Dervish to a secluded place and place a unit with Blast or a unit I want to keep in the backlines far away.

Chrysalis Burst is an iffy card. I find it really fun to play but there is zero stability in that card. It could do absolutely nothing or spawn four Silithar Elders for all I know. I haven't had any insane spawns where there were four eggs all perfectly isolated from the enemy, so it's hard to say, but I suppose it is theoretically possible. I think it's very rare that Chrysalis Burst will win a game where you were completely losing just because even if you got four top tier spawns, the enemy can still attack them. I'd completely understand if it were removed though, despite being quite fun to play.

Now onto my complaint. Whereas Keeper of the Vale is still a 4/5 mana card has an insanely better chance of spawning something useful than not. The better your or the opponent's deck is, the better Keeper of the Vale is. It could spawn a Jaxi and that would still be great. But when it spawns something like an Ironcliffe Guardian, you can just lose right then and there. If there were at least some controllable factor, like it could only spawn a card less than its manacost that you played, then it'd probably be okay. But as it stands, you play Keeper of the Vale and basically win the game, or you get an excellent drop in almost any situation. You could get the WORST CARD possible and you still have a 4/5 on the board.

I dunno, I don't even lose that much to the card specifically, but it really irks me how the power swing of the card is "Very strong" to "Free win".
