Born into an unassuming life, she was given to the Empire anonymously by her biological father, a citizen of the Empire who didn't want to raise a child. As a result, she was raised as a ward of the state, and prepared for a life of slavery. This changed when she began to excel at running. Zalia was running very competitive times without any real training.
The Maledom Empire saw a use in her. They were famously lacking in any real female athletics representing the nation, and believed that a slave winning races would help support their worldview. Thus, she was taken out of the generic life-path she was on and entered into a world of physical fitness.
The Empire decided to train her, harshly. Days were spent performing grueling amounts of calisthenics, while others involved weight training or hours spent on the treadmill Rest days were barely that, with every day she wasn't exercising being designated for pain. This was done to condition her to associate inaction with hardship, which she has internalized deeply.
Her meals are boring, consisting mostly of flavorless nutrient pastes designed to promote the perfect body, and hydration is heavily enforced. Failure to drink enough water (measured by frequency and amount of pissing) and failure to comply results in further negative reinforcement, often involving urine.
However, she is given some moments of pleasure. An improved time in any race (she competes in 5ks, 10ks, and even some Marathons mostly, though she will also do smaller distances if told to) is rewarded with a full, deep orgasm. Significantly worse times are punished with intense pain and humiliation.
Even clothing style is designed for a specific purpose. She must always wear a large collar, which contains information about her exact location, speed, heart rate, and other useful bits of data, and otherwise races in the bare minimum most nations will accept. She is always barefoot, which reinforces to her that she is a slave and helps her to run more naturally. It also provides a nice contrast with her "handlers", as a nearly nude, barefoot Zalia looks like a lesser creature compared to her clothed companions.
Zalia is among the best in the world at 5ks and 10ks, but it has come at a price, and in private, she is a nervous, servile wreck. Years of conditioning have led to her breaking down as an independent person, and (in a funny twist) she is truly terrified of running away. The Empire has made themselves a champion, but at the cost of a cunt.
