Is crafting worth it?

I disagree. Time-gated recipes (1 craft per day) can give significant amounts of money for almost zero time investment.

Every day, I craft Plates of Piquant and Meaty Plant Food (http://www.gw2spidy.com/recipe/9790, http://www.gw2spidy.com/recipe/9792) - gated ingredients for Mawdrey, and also Bolt of Damask (http://www.gw2spidy.com/recipe/7309). This brings me 3.0-3.5g daily, taking maximum 5 minutes of my time total.

Some tips (nothing advanced, just learned this stuff by experience - may be very unoptimal, but gets the job done for me):

1) Ignore the estimated profit of the craft that gw2spidy gives you. In its calculations, gw2spidy buys ingredients via sell orders, which is a significant waste of money, so its estimates are very pessimistic (e.g. it says 35s for Damask, whereas in practice I get ~2g per piece).

2) Used buy orders to buy ingredients and study their daily fluctuations. For instance, Silk Scrap (http://www.gw2spidy.com/item/19748), the main ingredient for damask, fluctuates wildly, so every day I just open the graph, find the lowest point (today it was at 1.98s per scrap), and create buy orders for that amount.

3) Don't sell crafts by undercutting the lowest sell order. Instead, sell them at reasonably high price. Every day, after logging into the game, I check pages of the crafts that I intend to sell (e.g. for Damask that'd be http://www.gw2spidy.com/item/46741). Then, I look at the graph of prices, take a look at the recent spikes (e.g. over the recent week, Damask spiked three times around 14.5g), undercut the top of the spikes a little (zero science here, just something that seems reasonable to me) and create a sell order. Most of my crafts sell within a day (not immediately, yes, you have to be patient), some have to be there for 2-3 days, and very rarely I have to cancel the sell order and relist them under lower price (e.g. when prices for damask plummeted a few weeks ago).

4) Do your research. I'm pretty sure that there exist other recipes that can bring similar profits (e.g. Deldrimor Steel Ingot can probably be on par with Plate of Meaty Plant Food), so sky's the limit.
