Crucifixion in the Philippines

When I was a child, it was a family tradition to go to our province when it's holy week. There just wasn't anything to do for three days - malls are closed, TV channels and radio stations were dead, there was literally nothing. At least in our province, you can take a dip in the beach a few blocks away.

To get there however, you needed to pass by several towns and other provinces - there wasn't the superhighways then that we have now that allowed you to skip those and cut your trip to just a couple of hours.

Anyway, the point I'm trying to get to is that you see people doing this. On every fucking town. As a kid. And it sticks with you. I'm talking rows of guys whipping themselves to a bloody mess, men several feet in the air with rusty nails on their hands baking in the hot sun, and some other doofus beside you on the ground getting his turn while you're stuck in slow-ass traffic.
