The DAO Was Not Hacked | Mt. Gox 2.0

Yes but I believe where the bug occurred is a very important distinction here.

This particular DAO is like a company that people invested in. People chose to trust their eth to this DAO and then it made bad decisions and lost it due to a design flaw. The transfer of value worked perfectly, allowing token holders to decide to invest in what turned out to be an easy target for this attacker. It has happened with fiat and also in Bitcoin (MtGox anyone?).

If a few one dollar bills had been created and, through some crazy manufacturing defect spontaneously exploded into 184 billion dollars upon issuance, then the medium of exchange of value itself is broken and I believe it is reasonable in this case to recall the 184 billion and fix the problem. If I willingly make a bad $10,000 investment in a company and lose all my money, that sucks but the dollar worked exactly as intended. This analogy is a stretch because the nature of crypto and physical money differ but hopefully it gets my point across.
