Why Did I Enjoy Playing Games So Much When I Was Little? Now I'm In A Hurry To Finish Them

It's because children are crap at everything. I remember playing sports as a kid and it seemed like a big challenge. Learning the rules, not getting distracted, playing with others, using the equipment, seeing a game through to the end etc.

Now if I wanted to play a game of tennis, I would just pick up the racket and play a couple of matches, then go home. No thought would be involved.

It's the same with video games. You know the language of gaming - you understand the mechanics. Every game is basically just a sequel. Most children can't even finish video games.

And, having said that. Game design has been streamlined and improved - so this feeling of knowing what you're doing will have intensified.

Compare, say, early Tomb Raider and Uncharted. Tomb Raider was slow paced and counter-intuitive. Uncharted sticks you on some rails and if you get stuck, it's because you're being an idiot.

Or think about the early Resident Evil or Silent Hill games. Even when you go back and play them now they require a lot more invention and exploration. There's no, "hey asshole, go over here and do this" cursor on your mini-map.

You will get lost and you will get stumped by some really dumb puzzles. I'm not sure you can even get lost in the new Resident Evil games.
