I would argue that Celebrimbor should have known that anyway. If you were going to come at me with “I don’t know what’s so hard to understand” then, at least look at it from the other point of view where a character lost agency (his skills and rank as master craftsman) to give show halbrand something to telegraph to the audience. These moments where Celebrimbor should shine (no pun intended) are severely diminished and some people - those you don’t understand how they don’t get it - are thrown out of their immersion.

It’s the same where Galadriel survives mount doom being turned on like an engine, the fires of which are powerful enough regularly to destroy but in this magical world the only thing hot enough to undo the one ring.

I don’t mind magic metallurgy and basis. I do mind internal consistency and loss of agency.

But again, it’s just one opinion.
