Why does this give me The Ick so bad?

There’s apparently a thing in psychology where we tend to instinctively have a bit of an ‘eww’ reaction to selflessness we feel is being done for an ulterior motive which everyone on this sub will likely have some experience with! Can’t remember what it’s called though.

Obviously I don’t know this person but my takeaway is that there’s something really sad about someone who is doing something that’s objectively a good thing for others (providing shelter etc) but is utterly unable to take credit for it in a non-maladjusted way, so they come across as a fart-sniffing ass instead. For exvangelicals specifically I think it’s probably an instinctive retch because of the way it reads, there’s a certain register of language associated with agenda-pushing personal ‘heartfelt’ stuff that sends my internal bullshit sense absolutely wild before I’ve even heard the point they’re getting at.

One thing evangelicals never realise on the inside is that ‘honest, Holy Spirit-motivated confessional writing’ to people who’ve not been indoctrinated since toddlerhood actually has the tone of ‘blatantly bad-faith agenda pushing’.
