Does pgp encrypting my M Disc files make sense

> burglar breaks into your family members house: he's going to steal drugs, gold, guns, and other valuables.

Wow what an old fashioned idea. Right from the days before credit cards were invented. Everybody these days must know that a burglar will take whats worth the most money? Since the 2000's at the very least that has included the computer and related stuff including the m-disc. Why? Because its worth money, to buy drugs etc. He doesnt even need to do any of the work himself, just needs to steal it and sell it.

> so he got your M-disk, how many computers even have BD readers in them?

Why is it not a DVD m-disc? Why cant anyone who can identify a blu-ray m-disc not also buy a reader? Heck they can be bought off amazon and plug in via USB it couldnt be easier. Besides, like I said above, someone can just buy the stuff off him as thats what he is doing, selling his ill gotten wares.

> he was curious and popped in your M-disk, and now he has your SSN? ok, so? You can't just turn an SSN into cash, so he would need a ton of other info plus have a fake ID made in your name

Wow how convenient that that same unencrypted m-disc has all that extra info on it! Who would have thought that was not a co-incidence? Besides, he likely also had fresh unshredded paper copies of everything. The guy who buys the m-disc off him will end up getting the digital copies leaving the burglar (we have upgraded him to one who can perform ID theft using paper docs) goes and does his thing.

Jesus we live in a world where people raid bins to find pooly shredded documents so they can stick them together and glean off the details needed to open up bank accounts of fake an ID. Dead babies have their ID's stolen if they died something like 20 years ago. Everyone I know shreds anything that has a name and address on it, why, because that is used as a method of proof of address. Needed to get many things such as bank accounts. Heck today the crims are even opening bank accounts / ordering questionable stuff to be delivered TO YOUR ADDRESS after they stole your name and address off an envelope. They then bribe/employ the postie to deliver these things to them, leaving you to deal with the police when they question your massive order of fertiliser and offshore accounts that suddenly got opened.

Again, I have to pint out how wonderfully naive you are in this dream world of yours where you think that private financial and related data is so secure by itself and unencrypted (paper or scanned) that you think no harm can come of it. You and those like you are those who suffer at the hands of the burglar who, and I will say it again NEED NOT TO KNOW HOW TO DO THIS SHIT to make you the victim. All he needs is a buyer and there are plenty of them. Dont convince yourself you are going to be targeted by the drugged up teen and not the guy who has learned this as almost a "profession" over many years, who employs the drugged up teens in one of the many gangs that ACTUALLY DO EXIST who know through their connections who wants what and who pays the most.

Even if the guy isnt in a gang he may know of that geeky bloke who wants all and any computers and discs etc. This bloke cant burglar an ant farm but he always seems loaded and pays well for this techy crap. He said something about the "dark web" once whatever that may be.

> your family (?) opens the disk and finds out you take dabeetus meds? mkay. why do they need to be protected from that?

I dont think OP ever said anything like that but maybe somtimes the "operation you had done down there" is private.

> You leave it in a bank vault and some Bad Actor somehow gets the key to your safe deposit box

Wow thats a blast from the past. In the UK you have to travel quite a distance to find anything like a safety depist box. Normally they are only seen on old TV shows. Recently they fell out of favor even more after that massive london SDB heist we had a few years back where the crims drilled through the vault wall and also aftre the police raided all SDB's (without a proper warrant) because "only drug lords use them" and all SDB's were suspected to contain illegal stuff. They were supposed to raid the "unclaimed" SDB's but instead raided the entire vault.

> The gubment decides to do secret SDB inspections

They dont need to bother. The police can do that for them, publicly as they already do. Besides, the gubment already has your unencryped cloud backup they intercepted. If you wont encrypt the data at rest, why the hell would you even think about encrypting in transit? Ever heard of Snowden?

BTW, you know that reddit uses https right. Why the hell would it need to do that in your backwards naive world where nothing needs encrypting, certainly not some text on reddit.

People like yourself pop up in my life from time to time. It feels like you have been living on the moon, that you are th digital equivalent of someone who walks across the road without looking because "nothing can hit me". You probably also:

- Dont have a pin, or anything else securing your phone/tablet/computer. In fact you probably disable any full disk encryption enabled by default because its stupid and slows the phone down.

- Dont lock your doors, the burglars will get in anyway.

- Dont hide your debit card pin, or even display your account number and sort code publicly like Jeremy Clarkson once did in a national newspaper because nobody can possibly do anything with those... till they proved him wrong. I bet he was on the phone closing that account pretty quick after that blunder.

- Dont use 2FA for anything. And when you are forced to you tantrum on the floor.

Maybe its a good thing? All the ID theft crims are looking for the easy targets. Well here you go guys, you chow down on his data while I just go somewhere you are not.
