"Donald Trump had to be rich and white. That's the difference."

The "talent" of populism demagoguery is to fan the flames of this anger populism and direct it towards designated enemies.

FTFY

There's nothing inherently wrong with populism. Populism is simply a term for the populace organizing against the ruling class. And oftentimes the populace has very legitimate grievances. For instance both the American and French Revolutions were populist movements against the royal government.

You do get demagogues sometimes that exploit populist anger and redirect it away from the ruling class, and towards innocent demographics. That was Adolf Hitler and the Nazis in Germany after WWI.

This year we had an opportunity to leverage the populist movement for useful progress. We had an inspiring leader in Bernie Sanders who saw what was going on and sought to do right by the people. The ruling class conspired against him, and then all but ignored the populist movement in the country, allowing a demagogue like Trump to exploit it uncontested. So here we are.
