ELI5 : Why are multiple screws used to fit modern car tires ? Why can't they use a single nut (like F-1 cars)? Won't it be easier to handle a single screw instead of multiple?

My 16yo lost control of my F150, went off the road, through a shallow ditch and stuffed it into a stand of small trees. The police got there at the same time as me. One of the officers had a pry bar he used to get the front bumper off of the tire, then asked if I thought I could drive it out. Four wheel drive, reverse, full throttle, tearing backwards out of the trees and back through the ditch, while two of Pennsylvania's Finest stood by and watched - and because there was no need for a tow, no injuries and no property damage, they didn't have to write a report, and let my daughter off with just an unofficial verbal warning to be more careful. I limped the truck to a body shop, where they determined it was totalled.
