ELI5: Why are stimulants used to treat ADHD?

Not the person you responded too, Never took adderall but with ritalin/methylphenidate this is my experience on that whole 'personality changing' thing

My personality is still more or less the same, I like the same things I used too like, I enjoy the same things I used too like, I dislike what I used too etc etc,

However, i'm a lot more focused and serious about things, this isn't necessarily a bad thing as I can still have fun and take things light heatedly, I can still enjoy myself in a care free way, and socializing is a lot easier to engage in and enjoy because of reduced symptomatic interference,

but at first it was a bit difficult coming to terms with this inner change, to the extent where because I finally understood how it felt to have that, what i've been lacking my entire life, that straight forward sort of task oriented functionality, I often started to feel guilty if I didn't really utilize it as much as I could have during that day, or if I didn't do something productive. For myself this was just part of coming to terms with it, restructuring my life to involve a functional mind as opposed to living what used to be a completely uncontrollable, ultimately frustrating to try to improve anything lifestyle

The thing is it never really changed /me/ for who I was, it just allows my mind to function in a way i've missed out on for pretty much my entire life, this can throw things into perspective a bit, and it can make you bitter at things especially if you start to feel like they are a waste of your time,

where as unmedicated me couldn't give two damns about whether or not it's a waste of time, if it's stimulating, i'll probably get dragged right in until I get bored and go onto the next stimulating task
