ELI5 how can a refrigerator burn propane and cool the inside?

It doesnt burn propane. The propane acts as a medium to absorb and release heat.

The gas compressed by the compressor first passes the condenser to cool down. Making it a high pressure liquid. Wich then passes the expansion valve or capillary tube and enter the evaporator. after wich the pressure significantly drops and the liquid expands rapidly and turns partialy into a gas. It is this change of state that causes the temperature drop. Because to go from one state to the other ( liquid to gas) ,energy is required. This energy is drawn in the form of heat from the products you want cooled. Then eventually all liquid will be evaporated and sucked in by the compressor and the cycle repeats.
