ELI5: What is a kidney stone/why do people dislike it so much?

The first time I got a kidney stone at the age of 38, I cried like a baby. The pain was so intense and would not let up. When they gave me morphine for the pain i was never so grateful in all my life. On a scale from 1-10 a kidney stone is about a 15. I had to have a procedure where they went in and up through the pee hole in my wee wee with a long tube, grab the stone and pull it out the tip of my wee wee. Then they put a stint inside the tube that runs from my kidney to my bladder to help keep it open. They left a long string attached to the stint that hung out the tip of my wiener about 2-3 inches. The string was there so they could remove the stint about a week or so later. Every time I'd go pee, there was this string hanging there. Some times I look for the string and it would be gone hiding up inside my pee hole. But when I'd pee it would come back out.

On the day I was suppose to have the stint removed I was nervous and was dreading the Doctor slowing pulling on that string that was attached to the stint deep inside my body. And I would imagine how painful it was going to be to have it pull out. The doctor had me drop my pants and told me to lay back on the table, he was making small talk about something, I don't remember what then suddenly, without warning, he yanked that string that had been hanging out the tip of my wiener like he was starting an old chain saw. I yelled OH SHIT and was hit in the face with a splash of warm bloody bodily fluid as the string with the stint attached came out of my wiener.

I have a stone right now. A few days ago the pain was in my back today it's moved into my bladder, where it feels like i'm being stabbed with a switchblade knife. Pain level this morning was 8 right now it's about a 5.
