ELI5: Whats stopping us from going back into Iraq?

Any politician who recommends such a maneuver would most likely be committing political suicide. Also, it would be a poor play by President Obama to start a confrontation when he is so close to the end of his last term. He might possibly ruin his very storied legacy and jeopardize any chance for another democrat being elected by throwing a monkey wrench into the works.

A full frontal assault that includes a large occupational force would be disastrous for American morale and a great monetary strain. Current polling would probably show that the American public is weary of a war. HOWEVER, I would say it feels the complete opposite about special forces interaction. With all the new movies and glorification high-speed soldiers are receiving, I'm positive any political candidate at this time would have no problem answering, "yes" to special forces targeting, retrieving(kidnapping), and just plain out drone strike high level targets.

Not to mention the incredible successes the countries special forces have been having. It seems like yesterday UBL was taken down and now Abu Sayyaf. Though I'm sure there are many unheard mission failures, the public display of success has definitely resounded in the American public.

Unfortunately, this ultimately should not be an American issue. I do not believe we "started it" with the invasion but did perhaps add a little fuel to the fire that had been brewing there for a long time. What we need to consider is colonizing it and removing the stigma that is associated with that term.

The next few lines are my personal ideas and are meant to be taken with a grain of salt. If we TRULY want some sort of "peace" in the region we need to go in and literally take over. We're talking colonization of all their assets. This in essence, is completely wrong to the Iraqi people but we as an occupation force-must start to act like one. I'm not talking about fast tanks going down a highway squishing civilian cars.

But I am talking about creating bread lines. We will need to start selling and exporting their products. We need to take a cut to NOT PROFIT but to maintain our forces there while we stabilize the region. We need to fortify our interests while we build an infrastructure. We need to control the people by giving them a little bit in the beginning and slowly bringing them back up to speed. I'm talking benefits for the American people too, I'm talking 1999 in 2016 gas prices for the American people.

I'm talking EDUCATION. For too many years the young have suffered and the instability in the region has probably sent Iraq back at least 5 generations. We create the bread lines so that the people are fed-not to control the population through starvation. We create the schools so that they can feed their nation.

In no way am I saying my idea of "colonization" is completely right nor the only way. But I do feel like the American public needs to benefit from ANY conflict. Soldiers and their families sacrifice a lot and if America can provide and plan a future for Iraq, I as an American citizen see no reason why we aren't confiscating their oil fields to help us all here.
