My opinion may be totally at odds to the medium in which I use to convey it, but I think I'd be OK with the global communications net going away.

I think about this all the time while I'm in traffic. I look around me while people surf the web and attempt to drive cars. I think about the isolation to our neighbors because of the ease we can find people who think just like us hundreds of miles away. We stop communicating with people physically next to us for the ability to talk to a stranger we'll never really know.

Sure the loss of the internet would have many negative effects, but humanity doesn't seem mature enough to balance the power of instantaneous communications with very different cultures. I'd be ok if it just went away.
