Jack Everlane had know the Darling family nextdoor since they had moved in 17 years ago. Two years after that their daughter [name] had been born, and Jack had watched the young girl slowly grow. He'd agreed to keep the puppy for her Christmas present hidden in his garage in the week before the holiday so the girl wouldn't find it, and he'd let her use the pool in his backyard for her 11th birthday party. Jack was divorced, his wife long gone and no kids to speak of, so he spent most of his time reading financial reports for his brokerage business or working in the shop in his garage.

But this was different. It was late at night on a Friday. Much later than anyone on a normal 8-5 schedule would be awake. Jack was only up because he had lost track of time reading a prospectus on his downstairs office. A rustling sound outside had brought him to his senses, and when he looked out the window what did he see but the sweet girl from next door, dressed quite inappropriately for her age, struggling as she attempted to quietly climb the trellis that clung to the wall leading up to her bedroom window.
