You're probably right that talking past each other is partially to blame for all this culture war nonsense, but I think you're taking the right's argument at face value here. There's an actual concerted movement by rightwing politicians like Ron DeSantis to change how history is taught in schools to eliminate the negative connotations and contexts of historical racism - what they call a "neutral" presentation of history, and they're using the CRT boogeyman to justify it. That those rare, outlandish instances of teachers being racist have happened, doesn't at all justify legislating away historical context in the classroom, and it points to their whole reaction towards CRT being a bad-faith excuse to erase history.
