First Blood Cancelled?

Explanation is up on an eSports writer's facebook page:

So to clarify what’s going on with First Blood, Basically having to psych myself up to do any League content these days takes a Herculean effort. It was like that before the Reddit ban. Every time an article or a video went out it was just a day of constant shit, messages and abuse and hassle. We knew we had a following but increasingly the politics that surround League of Legends have kept us from growing that following and now I’m in the unenviable position of needing to grow a platform that can’t be interfered with just to put content out and have it reach the audience for who it is intended.

When I think of the effort the show was. Players told absolutely not to come on as guests, anyone vaguely affiliated with LCS being “warned” about working with us, the strategising about how to make third party content irrelevant, the deliberate scheduling of rival broadcasts, a ton of other shit you wouldn't believe… Hell despite all that we even got a sponsor in place, only for it to be taken off the table by the same bullshit that made doing this show a fucking nightmare. The classic tap on the shoulder and “have you considered this.” Everyone wants to keep the paymasters happy. We should have signed with WTFast.

Only reason I kept it going this long was because of the hardcore following we had, which was truly appreciated. Before the Twitch crash we were going to say that we had given the show a lot of consideration and that if we didn’t see decent numbers this week we were going to kill it until we could come back with a platform to ensure it would find an audience. Without that audience all the shit isn’t really worth it. And I’m not talking about money. The last show we streamed made 3 cents in streaming revenue. We don’t spam ads, we don’t look to exploit it. It was always meant to be a space to say the things that you can’t elsewhere relating to League of Legends.

There’s plenty of things I can be focusing on that won’t lead to this sort of hassle. I’m booked for so many weekends doing hosting and discussion moderation. As e-sports grows there’s plenty to write about. I've had talks about book deals that I'm putting on hold. I will have a bigger house soon with some studio space so there will be more streaming content. There will be new shows. But honestly, putting this sort of time and effort into something that just causes you, your colleagues and your guests nothing but hassle isn’t really worth the effort if the end product is seen by few. Even if we buck the trend this week, what happens the week after and then the week after?

So yeah, thanks to all of you who supported the show since it started but let’s be real – they were always going to find a way to finish it and we were always going to get bored of increasing our effort to keep it going for diminished returns.

VoD of this abruptly ended show will be out soon. We’ll keep an eye on the numbers and see what happens. Until next week then, thanks to all who tuned in tonight and all the other nights before it.
