Formless Oeden...

As I mentioned before, why is the Doll so uncertain of Gehrman's love? Of Moon Presence's love? Its love towards the Hunter is unconditional; it was how it was made, yet why does she not remember you, when you kill her, and yet still talks about other hunters in the past? Why does her heart yearn, and why does she cry when you retrieve her real life counterpart's hair comb? Let us start form the beginning: as we notice, though Gehrman loved his doll immensely in the real world, we never see him interact with the doll in the Hunter's Dream. In fact, he carelessly tells the Hunter that we may "use the doll, if it would please you" as if she was just a doll. This is a far cry from a person who painstakingly took care of an inanimate doll as his one, and only companion and of a hunter who wished for an unfaltering companion as we learn from the Tear Blood Gem: "Created from a shining silver doll tear, this blood gem is a quiet but unfaltering friend that continually restores HP, the life essence of a hunter. Perhaps the doll's creator had wished for just such a friend, albeit in vain." Why is Gehrman's wish in vain? Gehrman no doubt took a liking to the Doll at first, but this love quickly turned sour as time went by. Perhaps in a fury, in a moment of perversion, or perhaps in desperation to seek a way out, and lashed out at the Doll. Perhaps he thought that by killing the Doll, the dream itself, he would be free, to his horror, he finds, much like we do, that the Doll cannot die. Gehrman is trapped. And much like ourselves, he must have realized that the Doll had no memory of him. The one which he looked to give him comfort, and companionship was his prison. But not merely a prison, but one which only loved him, and when struck down forgot about him. The Doll only remembers bits, and pieces; she talks about Gehrman, but she only regards him as an old hunter. Had she been his constant companion, surely she would have more to say about Gehrman, and perhaps other hunters. Instead, we get nothing. Gehrman withdraws himself from the Doll, appearing only as an obscure spirit, occasionally sleeping, pleading for someone to save him. He was betrayed, and yet cannot escape. For Moon Presence, Gehrman's withdrawal from the Doll, was also a betrayal. Rejected by Gehrman, Moon Presence looks for someone to replace him. Moon Presence cannot merely eject Gehrman from the dream however, not because he is the host, but because it still holds onto him possessively: it will not let Gehrman go until someone else takes his place as its surrogate, and the object of it, and the Doll's affection. Hence the Hunters who are "invited" to the dream: the Doll, and Moon Presence are looking for someone to replace Gehrman; they must be able to fulfill Gherman's purpose (so that he will allow himself to be refused, and defeated), defeat him, and also willingly remain dreaming (as we have heard from other Hunters who once dreamed, they decided to return to the world of the waking), and thus bound to the Doll, and Moon Presence. Every time Gherman's offer is accepted, the Doll's/ Moon Presence's love is implicitly rebuked, and the Doll's memories of being loved (or not) are wiped away in scorn. The Doll, and Moon Presence, eagerly await for a Hunter to accept their love. The Doll's doubts of Gehrman's love, and the Moon Presence's love then is understandable: why does the Hunter it love spurn it so? Why does he withdraw himself from her? Why did the Moon Presence trap her in a dream, where her love was always be unrequited? The Doll has no memory of love, for the Moon Presence does not need to remember those who did not fulfill its own wishes. The comb evokes such pain, but also joy for the Doll remembers it as a memento of when Gherman did love her. For the Japanese, combs have been a symbol of severance due to the Izanagi – Izanami myths (And indeed, one could connect Moon Presence's appearances as a conglomerate of bones, and human flesh as one resembling of the rotten appearance of the decaying Izanami after spending time in hell; like wise, the rejection of Izanami by Izanagi when he beholds her horrible form is somewhat similar to Gehrman's own realization of the true nature of the Doll, and the dream), and while the Doll is both overjoyed for the sense of love she remembers, she is also over come with grief for the severance that has occurred.

When Gehrman is defeated, and Moon Presence descends upon the dream to embrace its new surrogate child, it does so gently. But if should we consume an entire umbilical cord, we gain the power to refuse her, to resist her. From there, it seeks to destroy us; an invader with enough insight, or knowledge to transcend the dream, and transcend humanity. For the Moon Presence, you are an invader, and furthermore, you have stolen from it, its surrogate child. Yet when it dies, the dream does not end, you do not wake up. Instead, you become an infant; for see, while the Moon Presence died, the part of it which loves the Hunter conditionally, the part of it which actually support the dream, the Doll is still alive. Perhaps, if it should die now, the Dream would end, but you are a child, and the Doll embraces you lovingly like a mother. Like Moon Presence or perhaps but it was the part of Moon Presence which unconditionally loved the Hunters which inhabited its dream, the Doll loves you as it did before, and perhaps will forever.
