You may be right. I just really wanted to stress to OP that they should be talking to a lawyer about this and not posting online about it in a way that they can be easily identified. The internet has told me a million times to never deal with the police without a lawyer. OP made another post in r/legaladvice with the same account where they confessed they didn't know where it came from beyond an acquaintance they're no longer in contact with. What happens if the cop doesn't buy the story and suspects they're covering for their friends? There's just too much that could happen to approach this without some kind of legal counsel. Thankfully it looks like OP did the smart thing for once and deleted their account. I agree it's gotta suck to have to deal with all this right before the semester starts.
