Guide to River Crossings for Nobo in the Sierra

As a wilderness explorer and fisherman I don't worry about creek crossings. My skills have tought me what to do through trial and error. If I mess it up then it's on me. I know my ability and I know what conditions will result in a safe crossing. If there is even a chance that my skills don't get me through a situation then I don't put myself in that situation.

You should not think only one step ahead. Always move slowly with precision and intent. If you're blindly stepping across then you're likely to have trouble. If you look for a safe foot placement and slowly put your weight on that spot then you'll avoid shifting rocks that cause you to slip. Never step on something that is slippery, and it's not as obvious as you think having watched many people cross on the PCT in years pass.

Have a rule, stick to it, every time. Mine is that I must decide whether I'm crossing that spot within 3 seconds. If it takes longer it's because my brain is telling me that it's not safe, therefore I move upstream and find a spot where there is no hesitation. The more you think about it the more you'll try to tell yourself it'll be fine. That will put you in dangerous situations. So have a rule and stick to it every time.
