It's doable currently if you don't mind a bunch of extra hitching. You can currently hike north from Ashland to the northern boundary of Crater Lake NP at Hwy 138. From there you'll need to hitch to Willamette Pass (Hwy 58) near Shelter Cove. So yeah, it's doable even if it is a bit of a PITA. Things could change of course - the Windigo fire seems to want to blow up more than Tolo Mountain.

I'm at Timberline Lodge right now and central OR has gotten noticeably smokier over the last couple of days, even once north of the Tolo Mountain ad Windigo fires. There are several other fires in central OR that aren't near the PCT but are contributing to smoky air quality; notably the Potter and Fly Creek fires.
