This guy explains why self pity is absolutely ridiculous while discussing the Stephen Fry incident.

This is exactly how people should confront things like this, some people just aren't capable of it though.

I had a best friend that I've known since 4 years old and he had some shit happen to him, I had worse things happen to me and we both knew about each others. He chose to seek sympathy whether he could find it where I chose to keep it myself and let myself deal with it. I tried to help him but he didn't want help, he only wanted sympathy and I've been growing ever the more tired of it.

Just recently he posted a status on facebook asking for help from people he barely knows, laying out his life for the world to see and I finally decided enough is enough and replied. He made it public how 'hard' his life has been and how badly he wants help and I countered that by giving specific examples of how myself and two of his other close friends have tried to help him only for him to tell us to "fuck off" he has never wanted help, he wants people to feel sorry for him and I just don't understand it. He is living the life that he chose for himself and it is a shit life. I had a shit earlier life and now I have begun the process of sorting my own life and making my life better for myself.

Looking for sympathy just does not get you anywhere, it gets a few bleeding hearts from people who don't know any better and that's it, you get the attention for a short while until people give up because they can't help you when you just want sympathy. My friends have always been there for me, I do occasionally need a little bit of support and they are always there to offer it to me and they don't lose patience because when I ask for help they know I genuinely need it and I am grateful for that but I know I would not get the same treatment if I didn't constantly try and improve my life but because I have made my own life better they are willing to put the time and effort in to help me when I need it because they know I want to help myself.
