Hawai'i Supreme Court judge appalled at State's argument that UH graduate assistants are "student help" and not public employees, in 1/19 hearing

I’m fully for GAs being compensated liveable wages. They’re given the grunt work and dirty work in many programs that constitutes long hours and tedious tasks. I’ve been there and it sucks.

However, this problem won’t get fixed until the university is given some breathing space with its budget. There’s been talks of closing down UHM and moving everything to West Oahu to alleviate the financial woes. The GA problem is just a symptom of a greater issue and it doesn’t help that the legislature is slashing the budget every chance they get. And yes, we can point fingers at administrative bloat (they boasted they eliminated a grand total of 9 admin positions to “save money” hah).
